The Lutheran Rangers program is set up so that the book work can be completed between third and eighth grades, although second graders may be allowed in at the camp's discretion. (To be allowed in, second graders must be able to participate in craft projects and other activities.)
It is up to each camp how many times a month, as well what day(s) and for how long each time, it will meet. The Links and Information Page can be used to find places to go for events or other things to do. If you have web sites or other information you want to share, please send it to the webmaster.
Typically, the program runs from the beginning of the school year until the end of the school year, and patches for the year are presented to the Rangers at the end of the year. During the school year, the camp meets twice a month. One meeting is for book work and taking tests for particular chapters from each unit, with one unit done in each grade each year. The other meeting is usually a camp-out, a one-day event, or some other activity. All of this, however, is up to each camp.
The program can be completed in five years, with the sixth year for any make-up testing as well as finishing off any other requirements, including the Solo Christos medal, the writing to the Missionary, or for achievement courses.
COMMON QUESTIONS
- • Does it cost anything to run a camp?
- Yes, but where each camp gets money varies; some camps get their money from fundraisers, some might get the money from the church, some might charge dues. The National Council charges its own dues as well.
- • Where do the dues charged by the National Council go?
- The dues go to insurance to cover any possible problems at National Events, as well as any necessary equipment or services to enhance the Lutheran Rangers program.
- • What is the National Council?
- The National Council is a group of elected people headed by a National Commander. The Council keeps the books up to date, approves achievement events that are created, and orders supplies (patches, t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc.).
- • Where do I get patches or other items with the Rangers Logo on them?
- You can ask the Chief Ranger of the camp to order it for you; however, orders for t-shirts, sweatshirts, etc. are usually taken at the beginning of the school year during camp registration.
- • What is the minimum amount of supplies my child needs to get when he starts the program the first year?
- Each child needs a Rangers vest (typically only used for formal events like the National Pinewood derby, or other events the camps deem to be formal events), a white shirt and dark blue or black pants (to be provided by each boy's parent/guardian), a Ranger t-shirt or sweatshirt (for non-formal events), and a Ranger book.
- • How much does all this cost?
- Prices for t-shirts/sweatshirts vary by size; they can be ordered through the National Council (check with your Chief Ranger about ordering). Prices of vests and books can be obtained from your camp. Pants and shirts can be purchased from any store and can be used for more than just Rangers. All costs vary from year to year.
- • How many leaders are needed to run a camp?
- Ideally, there is one leader per grade. If there aren't enough leaders, one leader can teach two grades, provided there aren't too many boys in each grade. If there are enough leaders, two or more leaders can teach larger classes. High school students can help out as Junior Leaders (especially if the local high school requires its students to do service hours); mothers have been used in some instances, too. Having a child in Rangers is not a requirement for a leader.
